THE VILLAGE

With its first apartment block built in 1971, Val Thorens has since developed into a serious contender for the best high-altitude skiing in Europe. THE SKIING

Set in an enormous ski bowl, Val Thorens has runs fanning out in all directions. With 600km and 166 ski lifts making up this incredible circuit, there is terrain to suit everyone from beginners to experts. Les Trois Vallees has a fast and efficiently interconnected system allowing you to utilise your day to the fullest. There are plenty of sweeping, gentle pistes for beginners, and a vast array of challenging reds or blacks for the intermediate to advanced skier. For snowboarders or freestyle skiers, head to the terrain park by the 2 Lac lift for cracking half-pipe action. The Val Thorens local area claims 140km of the entire Les Trois Vallees circuit, and it's a complete haven for those with confidence in their abilities.<br><br>There is an excellent choice of ski schools in Val Thorens for every discipline, teaching in several languages. GETTING TO VAL THORENS

The main ways of getting to resort are by private minibus transfer, self-drive, train to Moutiers or helicopter. By road, you can reach Val Thorens in 1.5 hrs from Chambery, 2.5 hrs from Grenoble or Lyon and just under 3 hrs from Geneva. OFF THE SLOPES

High altitude activities - we've got you covered. Val Thorens is home to the highest zip line in Europe at 3230m, reaching speeds of over 100km/h. Want to keep your feet closer to ground? Try mountain biking the Peclet Glacier, ice driving, snowmobiling or snowshoeing. Within the resort there is a well-equipped sports centre with gym, swim, spa facilities, and various sport courts. Or something you may not have even considered - ice diving, experiencing the frosty-blue world beneath a frozen lake.
