THE VILLAGE

Having grown up in the neighbouring resort of Morzine, Jean Vuarnet the 1960 Olympic Downhill Champion dreamt of developing a ski resort high above his home town. Enlisting expert help along the way, Avoriaz was designed with the avid skier in mind, and it has since thrived - expanding into the realisation of Jean's ambition. Similar to Val Thorens this purposely constructed ski-in-ski-out village features tall timber-dressed buildings, providing sensational views over the valley below. Exceptionally convenient, the ski resort is compact and phenomenally easy to navigate. Accommodation here is generally tailored towards the economically minded skier, with reasonably priced bars, restaurants, shops and supermarkets available. Being car free, you'll see horse-drawn sleighs pottering about the streets of this high-rise town - modern and traditional blend to form the distinctive character of Avoriaz.
