Le Refuge de Solaise is probably the most talked about hotel in the Alps right now. It is the highest in France and boasts alpine luxury perched high on the Solaise mountain peak at the giddy heights of 2551m, some 700m above the village. The views and isolation are what the refuge does best giving you first tracks in the morning, combined with a beautiful restaurant and a sublime spa this is definitely one of our recommendations for winter 19/20.
Formerly the upper cable car station, Le Refuge enjoys the longest daily sunshine across the resort and has been welcoming skiers to experience lunch in the vibrant atmosphere of La Tete de Solaise Restaurant and Bar for a number of years.
The alpine chic design, incorporating ancient woods and carefully associated fabrics, is felt throughout the three private apartments and eighteen rooms and suites. The fourteen-bedroom dormitory is an excellent inclusion perfect for single travellers or groups seeking a special elevated experience. With a distinctive, rustic style Jean-Charles Covarel and Jean-Claude Borel have created a beautiful mountain hideaway, suiting all types of traveller.
In complete luxury, the spa area offers the ultimate in altitude relaxation. Designed to let you unwind and escape the spa area features a sizeable twenty-five metre swimming pool, sauna, hammam and various treatment rooms.
Prices start from €300 on a bed and breakfast basis per night, based on two people sharing.
The enviable location of Le Refuge is only accessible via the slopes and the Solaise Gondola lift (09:00-16:30 daily), offering incredible views and an ‘away from the rest of the world’ feeling. Benefiting from sunrise two hours earlier than the rest of the resort permits you to carve those first tracks into the mountainside, long before the piste has been touched by anyone else. Not only does the sun rise earlier but you can also enjoy three further hours of sunset drinks and dining before watching the sky open up to a canvas of stars at night.
The comfortable classic and superior rooms, between 30-47 sqm, offer panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows and great for a cosy stay. The spacious family rooms and suites, from 59-68 sqm, include sweeping views of the valley and village below, and can sleep between four to six people across two bedrooms. All rooms are complete with a TV, minibar, telephone, safe, hairdryer and Wi-Fi access. Beds can be split into singles therefore making the larger rooms and suites great for families but also an excellent space for friends.
The dormitory, in the spirit of traditional refuges includes a shared bathroom, two toilets, sound system, Wi-Fi, individual lockers and hairdryers. This superb accommodation suits those seeking a unique opportunity to meet like-minded people and to share mountain stories in a warm, snug alpine setting. Alternatively, the dormitory can be booked on an exclusive basis.
The impressive 380 sqm private apartment is an attractive, luxurious eight-bedroom property sleeping up to twenty-four guests with panoramic dining, a fully-equipped modern kitchen and understated living space with bespoke touches to please even the most discerning eye for interior design.
La Tete de Solaise includes a restaurant, pizzeria, bar and a self-service area – making it a great lunch location and snack spot for skiers throughout the day. As a hotel guest you’ll enjoy a hearty mountain breakfast in the restaurant as part of your stay, with a la carte dinner at a supplement. The restaurant serves traditional fine French cuisine including filet de boeuf, risotto and scallops whereby the self-service and pizzeria option is only available during the daytime for lunch.
